Florida County to Buy Golden Gate CC for $29.1M ☘ Hoey Team ☘ eXp Realty
While Collier County voted unanimously to purchase the 167-acre property in Naples from Robert and Mario Vocisano, commissioners stopped short of promising to maintain it as a golf course. Commissioner Burt Saunders previously noted the property could be considered a site for a future veterans nursing home.
Collier County, Fla. will buy a 167-acre golf course in Naples, but, for now, it won’t be open to golfers, the Naples Daily News reported. Commissioners on June 25 voted unanimously to purchase the Golden Gate Country Club for $29.1 million from Robert and Mario Vocisano. The board also unanimously voted to maintain the property, but did not go so far as to vote to continue operating it as a golf course.
C+RB reported on the county’s initial plans to purchase the property in January.
The average appraised value for the property is $27.7 million, the Daily News reported. Buying the property is important not only for Golden Gate, but for the rest of the county, said Commissioner Burt Saunders, whose district includes the property.
“It’s 167 acres in the urban area, we’re not going to have an opportunity to have a piece of property situated like this,” he said.
What the property will be used for is not clear yet, the Daily News reported.
“I would suggest that we maintain it nicely for the community, keep it as an open space for right now,” Saunders said. “And then as we get into the fall we can figure out really what we can do with that property.”
Saunders has previously noted the property could be considered a site for a future veterans nursing home, though there’s no guarantee state or federal governments would choose to build a nursing home for veterans in Collier County, the Daily News reported.
Commissioner Donna Fiala said she would like to see the property continue as a golf course, the Daily News reported. At a town hall meeting, attendees “without exception” wanted it to stay an 18-hole golf course, she said.
“I don’t think we should give up on that,” Fiala said. “It’ll be the only golf course in town that would be affordable. And we don’t have that right now.”
But others on the board were against having the county operate a golf course, the Daily News reported.
“Golf courses lose money,” Commissioner Andy Solis said. “That’s why they want to sell it or turn it into something else.”
Commissioners will be asked to approve a 10-year note to purchase the property at their July meeting, the Daily News reported. Total debt service, including principal and interest, will be $33.9 million, according to a county staff report.
